Abstract:
Material suppliers, producers of manufacturing equipment, academic researchers, and aircraft/spacecraft manufacturers form a tremendous team whose ultimate goal is the creation of more efficient, safer, and socially beneficial final product. One would expect that these disciplines would work in unison towards that goal. Unfortunately, quite often, this does not seem to be the case. Short versus long term investment strategies, misinterpretation of needs, proprietary concerns, and narrow-minded focus lead to supplier-customer relations rather than a collaborative effort. This situation has limited our ability to make substantial improvements in our products which will meet our needs. Over the past 6-7 decades we have improved efficiency to the point where revolutionary changes are hard and we are content with mostly marginal evolutionary improvements. A shift in the paradigm is needed. The question is: Is that possible, given today’s situation, and how can we change the status quo for mutual long term benefits?
